Our Story
In the summer of 2011, Amy volunteered at the Office of Community Partnerships for the Montgomery County Executive's Office, under the direction of Ms. Lily Qi, the Asian and Middle Eastern Community Liaison. The internship exposed her to the nuances hidden within cultures, causing her to reflect upon her own experience as an ABC (American born Chinese). She realized that the problems her Chinese American peers frequently complained about sounded suspiciously familiar to her, and that many of them involved a lack of common understanding with parents.
In the 2011-2012 school year, Project Cultural Crossroads was developed through the LearnServe Fellows Program as a way to combat the inherent cultural gap between generations in the Chinese American community.
Through Ms. Qi, Amy met Mrs. Ruyan Teng, the director of C&T Youth Technology Academy. They discussed the issue and the proposed idea, and Ms. Teng offered her full support!
That same year, Amy got to know her bus mates, Kevin, Jennifer, and Yizhen, a little more. She also found out that her classmate, Lily, was an incredibly talented web designer! They shared some very similar experiences and a common passion to give back to their community. Right now, the five of them are the driving force behind the venture, building up the project as they help the Chinese American community build its connecting "crossroads".
